GEOMETRINAE....Orange Underwing to Twin - spot carpet

Recorded at Cromwell Bottom in recent years,in April... A dozen at Cromwell Bottom on th 20th  March  2002 and 9 on the same date in 2010(AC).This species can be found at Pixie wood Cromwell Bottom on sunny days in late March and  early April  Also recorded at Callis Wood Todmorden.,Copley and Knot wood Hebden Bridge.

Regulary recorded at light between 4th March and the 4th April throughout the area.

1 taken at light at Hedge Top lane on the 16th July 2002.Not recorded again but a large area of gorse and broom was cleared for grazing close to this record.

1669 Common Emerald  Hemithea aestivaria (Hb.)
1 to actinic light at Rochdale Road Walsden on the 15th August 2009(BL) was the first time this species had been recorded in Calderdale.
1 to MV light at Knott Wood Hebden Bridge on the 2nd July and an amazing 15 on the 9th July 2010(AC, BL and MC.)

1 found during the day at Stoodley Glen on 25th July 2010(BL)

1694 Smoky Wave Scopula ternata (Schrank, 1802)
Recorded at Upper Dean 29th June 1990.This is a very local species found on Billberry and Heather.(HxSS)

The flight season of adults  are between the 15th June and 20th August.Recorded throughout the area.

The flight season of adults are between the 24th June to 23rd August at Hedge top lane, Park road Elland , Cunnery wood and Midgley..

1713 Riband Wave Idaea aversata (Linnaeus, 1758)
Common at light throughout the area from mid June to late September , both forms occour  (non banded form. .I .a.remutata)

1715 Plain Wave Idaea straminata (Borkhausen, 1794)
The flight season of adults  are between the 24th June and 19th August. Close examination of all Riband Waves will reveal this species to be present in small numbers.

Occasional migrant in eruptive years.
1 at Elland in 1983(K.Garsed)

1720 The Gem Orthonama obstipata (Fabricius, 1794)Collinson wrote of this species, formerly known as the Migrant Gem but now called the Narrow –barred carpet. Two records from Kebroyd in 1959 and 1965.There are no recent records.

1722 Flame Carpet Xanthorhoe designata (Hufnagel, 1767)
Recorded throughout the area with the first adults seen from around the 5th April and the last on the 16th September .There are two flight seasons peaking in May and August..The table below shows numbers of individuals at light 1999 -2009

1723 Red Carpet Xanthorhoe munitata (Hübner, 1800-09)
Three old records of this high mountain species from the Hardcastle craggs  in 1895 ,1926 and 1 on the 24th July at Widdop reservoir 1897 (Mr W.G.Clutten of Burnley).An unconfirmed report of 1 to light at hardcstle craggs on 14th August 2010 (EG). A careful search for this species will surley reveal it’s presence there now.

1724 Red Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe spadicearia ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Regularly recorded at Hardcastle craggs up to 1928 and recently at Midgley,Wyvern Terrace and Park road..There are 7 recent records 3 in May ,1 in late July and 3 in August.

Regularly recorded at Hardcastle Craggs up to 1928 and 10 recent records between the 2nd May and 21st August ,Cromwell bottom,Withens Clough car park,Wyvern terrace , Park road Elland and Brookfoot.

1727 Silver-ground Carpet Xanthorhoe montanata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
The flight season of adults are between the 2nd May and 24th July.Adults are easily disturbed from vegetation during the day. 52 (there could have been double this number they were every where) to light near the Hinchcliffe arms on the 8th June 2009 and 70 + at Hedge Top lane 2010 found by torch light above a large nettle patch.

The flight season of adults  are between the 1st May and the 10th October.This species can be seen throughout the area and can be disturbed during the day from vegetation.

1733 Lead Belle Scotopteryx mucronata (Scop)
Collinson wrote of this species that there were 5 old records including one taken at light near Kebroyd in 1962.This species was split into two in 1970 and it was thought that S.mucronata was the predominant species but there have only been S.luridata recorded since and this indicates that this is the predominant species. Any specimems taken should be given extreme care.

Only 3 records between 1868 and 1924.(WEC).Nowerdays adults flight times are between 20th April and 26th September and can be seen  throughout the area in good numbers, 20 on the 4th August 1999 at Park Road Elland.(PT).This beautiful species was once called the Bedstraw Carpet .

1740 Galium Carpet Epirrhoe galiata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
In 1883 said to be common in the Halifax area(porritt’s list) and regularly reported up to 1928 at Hardcastle Craggs (WEC)

1 at Kebroyd 1966(WBa)
1 in Halifax 1983(WBa)
1 at light Park Road Elland 30th July 2000 (PT)

Common throughout the area the with the flight season of adults  between the  last week in  May through the summer moths with the last ones seen in the first week of September,  can be flushed fron meadows,woolland edges and also taken at light.

 

1744 Grey Mountain Carpet Entephria caesiata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) Regulary recorded from 1860 – 1928 but only oddly since at light 1963(BC).11th July  1924 said to be common on Warley moor attracted by sugaring large stones on the moor.(Gibson)

3 old records from Mixenden 1901 and Kebroyd in 1957 & 1958.The larval foodplant is said to becoming scarce in Yorkshire and this maybe the reason for no recent records. Find the foodplant find the species.??

Reported as common in the Hardcastle crags area in the late 1800’s

1751 Devon Carpet lampropteryx otregiata (Metc.)
The second Devon Carpet for Yorkshire and the first for Calderdale was caught at an actinic light in Hardcastle Crags on August 14th 2010 (EG) a photo  was sent to C.Fletcher for identification and confirmation ,it was then recorded on the 15th 21st and 25th at the same location.

1752 Purple Bar Cosmorhoe ocellata (Linnaeus, 1758)
The flight season of adults are between the 17th May and 8th September.Six recorded at light in Todmorden on the 20th July 2006 and 2nd August 2008.(BL)

1754 The Phoenix Eulithis prunata (Linnaeus, 1758)
The flight season of adults are between the 26th May and 27th August throughout the area.Wyvern Terrace 6 to light on the 5th June 2008 and 10 to light on the 27th July 2002 at Moorend gardens.

1755 The Chevron Eulithis testata (Linnaeus, 1761)
The flight season of adults  are between the 26th June and the 8th September.Recorded on the moors in good numbers to light  ,23 at Whiteholme drain on the  26th August 2007 and 17 at Langfield edge 23rd August 2008  and away from the moors in small numbers throughout the area at light traps.

Abounds on moors local to the Halifax area 1883 (Porritts list). Collinson said of this species’regular at light’

Recorded in good numbers near the moorland edge with 25 to light at Blake dean on the 11th August 2007 and recorded in small numbers throughout the area at light between the 16th June and the 24th August.

1757 The Spinach Eulithis mellinata (Fabricius, 1787)
Collinson said ‘Appearing oddly at light’and only 10 recent records.7 at Park road Elland between 14th and 23rd July 1999 and 2000.3 to light at Cromwell bottom 17th July 1999. 1 at Daisy Bank on 9th August 2001 and 1 Hedge Top Lane 8th August 2002. 1 at Todmorden 24th August 2007

1758 Barred Straw Eulithis pyraliata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Recorded at light between 2nd July and  2nd August .31 individuals between 1999 and 2009 with 4 to a heath trap at Ramsden wood 18th July 2009(BL)

1759 Small Phoenix Ecliptopera silaceata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
The flight season of adults are between the  3rd May  and 14th October with 578 individulas recorded  1999 - 2009.10 to light  at wyvern terrace on the 18th august 2009.

An upland species which has recently been recorded at lower ground
1 at Siddal 23rd and 27th September 1986 (WBa).Two distict flight times for this species are  shown in the table below .One found during the day on  Oct. 7th 09, Royal Calderdale Hospital grounds. (CSt)

This is a tricky species to get to grips with and only close examination of all Common Marbled Carpets will eventually reveal this species to be present in small numbers. With only 15 individuals definatly recorded between 1999 and 2009. Broadhead Clough(2), Hedge Top lane (7)Moorend gardens(1)Todmorden area (3) and Park road Elland(3)

As it name suggests common with adults on the wing between the 3rd May – 6th November .35 to light at Hall Wood Todmorden on the 14th Sept 2008 ,20  banded form and  15 dark form.(BL)

1765 Barred Yellow Cidaria fulvata (Forster, 1771)
Reported regulary and even abundant up until 1927 and has not been reported locally untill 1was at Cromwell bottom on the 17th July 1999 and 1 at Park road Elland 25th July 1999.(PT)

1766 Blue-bordered Carpet Plemyria rubiginata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
The flight season of adults  are between the 2nd July and 11th August in small numbers.Only 18  between 1999 and 2009.Three to light at Cunnery wood,Shibden on the 9th July 2009(AC ,CSut)Broadhead Clough ,Park road Elland and Gorpley Clough.

The flight season of adults  are between the 16th May and 10th November

The flight season of adults fall between the 17th May and  4th Novenber

1778 May Highflyer Hydriomena impluviata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Recorded at light in small numbers(27 individulas in 10 years 1999-2009) between 19th May and the 22nd June  at  Moor End Gardens Pellon ,Park Road Elland and Hardcastle crags.Distintive flight time are a good guide to these two species .

In Collinson there is reference to 1 old record but no details are provided.

Regularly recorded over the years up to the 1960’s but no recent records.

Epirrita    November Moths

The four epirrita species can only be separated with certainty by  examining the octavals or larval morphology. If there is any uncertainty they should be recorded as November Moth agg .There are 2000 + records of November Moth agg mainly in October / November.The records below are of definite species recorded by using examination of the octavals.All four species occour but little is known about distribution and flight times locally.

1 at Moor End Gardens, Pellon on 5th September 2004. (NCD)

1799 Winter Moth Operophtera brumata (Linnaeus, 1758)
Adult flight times are from 9th October to 14th January throughout the area in good numbers with 44 to light at Park Road Elland the maximum in one night. Larvae recorded from Broadhead Clough,Copley,Cromwell Bottom ,Shibden and Lowfields  all in May.

1800 Northern Winter Moth Operophtera fagata (Scharfenberg, 1805)
Adults can be seen from early November till early January throughout the area.

Before 1946 there were only two records but now taken regularly at light  between the 31st May and 22nd August.

Recorded as common in the Elland area in the 1980’s and 30 individuals to light between 1st June  and the 27th July at Park Road Elland 1999 – 2003.

Recorded at light traps throughout the area in small numbers between the 6th July and 4th September.Recorded on the moors in good numbers 25 at Whieholme Drain 25th August 2007 and 20 at Green Withens on the 26th August 2009.
